A Lecture Session on Tobacco Products, Tobacco Addiction and Cessation

An enlightening session on variety of issues related to tobacco was conducted at NMITD by Dr Prasad Rane from Aga Khan Health Services India on 20th October 2018. Dr Rane gave the students of NMITD, a 360 degree comprehensive understanding of all aspects related to Tobacco in India, right from their production, distribution, advertising, variety of tobacco products, the business models and vested interests involved, the existing laws for curbing the addiction to the serious health hazards –all mental/physical as well as socio-economical –  as a consequence of Tobacco related addiction. There were students of both MCA and MMS Present for the session.

Among others students got to know the following important facts on Tobacco:

“Tobacco is a product prepared from the leaves of the tobacco plant by curing them. The plant is part of the genus Nicotiana and of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family. While more than 70 species of tobacco are known, the chief commercial crop is N. tabacum. The more potent variant N. rustica is also used around the world.

Tobacco contains the alkaloid nicotine, which is a stimulant, and harmala alkaloids. Dried tobacco leaves are mainly used for smoking in cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, and flavored shisha tobacco. They can also be consumed as snuff, chewing tobacco, dipping tobacco and snus.

Tobacco use is a risk factor for many diseases, especially those affecting the heart, liver, and lungs, as well as many cancers.

India has 96,865 registered tobacco farmers and many more who are not registered. In 2010, 3,120 tobacco product manufacturing facilities were operating in all of India. Around 0.25% of India’s cultivated land is used for tobacco production.”

Most importantly students became aware of a concrete and powerful 4 D method for helping themselves or their loved ones to quit the tobacco addiction. The 4D method involves:

  • Delay: The urge will pass whether you smoke or not Drink plenty of water
  • Deep Breath: Getting oxygen to the brain helps release de-stressing hormones.
  • Drink Plenty of Water:
  • Do something:to take your mind off smoking

Every time they pulled out a deep-seated piece of plastic from the sand, we’re reminded that our efforts – however sincere – are only scratching the surface. Long way to go before we return the beach its natural glory. Keep at it! Most of the students realized that the sea was full of plastic bags and little bottles and were informed by CEO, IS Mr. IndranilSengupta that this could be recycled if they as consumers stack it and give it to the “radiwalla” for recycling. Students realized that most of the things which they use can be disposed of sensibly. A great learning experience!
United Way Mumbai’s Team ably guided the student volunteers along with 6 exerts from DOW chemicals who had come from USA. This activity was also supported by Solid Waste Management, MCGM, MCGM G/North Ward and our community partners ,Mahim Beach Clean Up, Beach

She highlighted how they do not allow any development in remote areas of Bastar in Chattisgarh and Gadchiroli in Maharashtra. She also propounded a view of Urban Naxalism as not being an imaginary concept and but one that has been in existence over the years, and thus should be taken with due seriousness. According to her many intellectuals sympathetic to extreme left philosophies, particularly Maoism, work extensively in cities as an urban front of the Maoists who operate from the Jungles.

To tackle the menace of Naxalism she advocated a three-pronged strategy of encounter, development and surrender to be implemented in the areas afflicted with the Naxalbari movement.
