Institutional Distinctiveness: Fostering Entrepreneurship Through Startup Bazaar and Udyojak - e-Cell Initiatives 

DES’s NMITD takes pride in its distinctiveness by nurturing entrepreneurial talent and empowering students to become job creators rather than job seekers. Through our dynamic Udyojak E-Cell, we provide a platform that fosters innovation, creativity, and business acumen among students. This initiative includes workshops, mentorship programs, and exposure to real-world entrepreneurial challenges, enabling students to transform ideas into successful startups.

DES’s NMITD plays proactive role in equipping students with the skills, mindset, and resources needed to lead the future of enterprise and innovation, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. As visible from vision and mission statements, the institute has been focusing on the entrepreneurial development of students while aiming at excellence in education and meeting the quality standards set by accrediting and regulatory bodies.

As a part of the Inter collegiate Festival, Roobaroo, Prayas - The Startup Bazaar was organized. The Startup Bazaar serves as a vibrant platform where student entrepreneurs showcase their innovative products and services, connecting them with potential investors, mentors, and customers. This initiative not only promotes budding startups but also provides students with practical exposure to market dynamics and customer engagement.

Participation of the budding entrepreneurs in the various E cell event PITCH PERFECT 2024 of IMDR, Pune was also encouraged. The faculty members of E-Cell trained the budding entrepreneurs to participate in the intercollegiate event PITCH PERFECT 2024 of IMDR Pune. Students got the opportunity to pitch their innovative ideas along with business plan in front of various corporate delegates and established entrepreneurs.

A MoU with Maharashtra State Skills University (MSSU), now called Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skills University was signed. Complementing this was the Capacity Building Development Plan, a series of workshops and training programs co-designed with Maharashtra State Skills University (MSSU), now called Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skills University,   to enhance entrepreneurial competencies. These sessions focus on critical areas such as business planning, financial literacy, digital marketing, and leadership skills. Students gain insights from industry experts and successful entrepreneurs, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the entrepreneurial journey. The faculty members who mentored the students were given training and then the students were also part of this workshops.

The various workshops conducted emphasized the benefits colleges can gain from their incubation centers, covering aspects from idea generation to business generation (Idea Generation---POC---Prototype Development---Product Development---Technology Development---Commerce). Academicians were encouraged to engage from the idea phase to product development.

This collaboration with Maharashtra State Skills University embodies our vision of producing future-ready leaders and aligns with the government’s mission of promoting skill development and self-reliance. Together, the Startup Bazaar and Capacity Building Development Plan inspire students to innovate, take calculated risks, and contribute meaningfully to the economic growth of the nation.

मूल्यांकन – Mulyankan – Quantitative Performance Based Appraisal System

DES’s HR department has implemented a faculty performance appraisal system with effect from AY 2022-23. Faculty members should ill self-evaluation forms and submit to HOD

Teaching Staff:

1. The verification will be done by HOD in terms of the authenticity of the supporting
2. Thereafter each appraisal form will be approved/disapproved by the principal or Director, Finance Controller and IQAC Coordinator. At this stage one to one discussion must happen between the faculty member and the panel of Director, Finance Controller and IQAC
3. One copy of approved or disapproved appraisal forms should be handed over to faculty member for his /her personal file and the original copy should be maintained by IQAC coordinator in IQAC records .
4. The annual appraisal report comprising of all approved and disapproved appraisal forms duly signed by the panel must be submitted to HR and Finance department for the proposal of annual increment of Faculty Members

Non-Teaching Staff

All non-teaching staff are also assessed through Self-evaluation and confidential reports. Thevariousparametersforstaffmembersareassessed underdifferentcategoriesi.e.performance, intellect, integrityand character, fitness, etc.

Kartavyam

At NMITD, we embrace a student-centered approach to learning that combines Indian values with a global perspective, sensitizing them to their social obligation. As part of the MCA and MMS syllabus, students undertake a project on Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and the Social Relevance of Business, which involves working with an NGO for 30 hours.

The MCA students are enrolled in a course called Institutional Social Responsibility, while the MMS students participate in the “Leadership and Self-Management” certification course in Talasari, Dist Palghar . During this program, they visit the field, act as mentors and tutors for tribal students, and gain awareness about their social responsibilities. They learn how their professional decision-making can impact the lives of underprivileged communities.

In collaboration, the MCA and MMS students have visited over 18 NGOs, including providing telephonic mentoring sessions for Kotak Education. They have also taught English to more than 40 students during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through their efforts, these students have made a positive impact on their community and demonstrated their commitment to fulfilling their social obligations.

Kartavyam Institutional Social Responsibility – DES Certification @ Talasari, Palaghar to Empower Tribal Youth

At NMITD, we believe in student centric approach to learning, based on Indian values and a Global Outlook . As a part of MMS syllabus, students have a project, Social Relevance of Business. MCA Students have a course entitled Institutional Social Responsibility. DES’s NMITD actively engage both the MCA and MMS students in this Certification course, “Leadership and Self-Management” at Talasari, Dist Palghar through field visit, being mentors and tutors for the tribal students and thereby result in awareness, regarding their social responsibilities, how their professional decision making can impact the lives of the less privileged community, etc.

This is a 15-week Certification which is conducted at Talasari, in association with Vanvasi Vikas Kendra.

Objectives

  1. To identify skills to which students need to be exposed to enhance employment opportunities
  2. To generate and promote a sense of self respect and dignity among students of hilly and tribal belt of Palghar district.
  3. Sensitize NMITD students to their social responsibilities.

Outcome

  • To integrate and synthesize learning gained outside the formal taught courses, enhance awareness regarding their proactive role in impacting community being .

Aikyam (ऐक्यम्) Oneness @ NMITD – Together we stand united amidst Covid 19

DES’s NMITD have developed an ecosystem of effective communication as an institutional social responsibility. DES’s NMITD is an active agent of social change. Our staff and students are increasingly responsive to community-based development initiatives. Being active agents of social change is not only considered a strategic priority but is also seen as a much needed responsibility. Sensitization of students and staff is the key agenda behind any of our social initiatives and we are committed to being a socially responsible group of educational institutions.

With millions around the world in lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, technology has provided the much-needed ability to stay connected with students, teaching fraternity, non-teaching staff and university authorities . Many who avoided digital communication tools have had to adapt to avoid personal and professional isolation.

Trust is the cornerstone of strong leadership. Dynamic Leadership @ DES’s NMITD, was proactive and at the forefront with virtual internships, starting online lectures, converting the opportunity to conduct online value added courses and empowering the faculty. Faculty was in touch with the students through online lectures and mentoring; value based webinars enhancing the skill sets of students and keeping their morale high. Non-teaching staff was in touch with the University of Mumbai, DTE and used to update all stakeholders with the latest circulars and GR.

Free initiatives were launched by the students like the Happy Manager’s Hub; Faculty members – Dr . Anita P Bobade taking a series of 6 free online webinars for Students, Housewives and Women Self Help Groups (SHG) to empower them with Financial Education. Dr.Kasturi R Naik conducted 4 webinars on “Emotional Resilience” for students and faculties to enable you to be self-aware and manage your emotional state, rather than getting overpowered by your emotions and affecting your mind and body. Mrs. DeepaHonrao conducted Certificate Course for “Developing Simple Web Pages” In today’s tecno-centric world, this helped students to make their own web pages, websites, HTML, Joomla.

Prof. Rahul Wadekar closely working with the Mumbai Police Force in managing and helping the needy stricken with COVID-19 . Our student Mr. Santosh Gupta too has been working closely with an NGO nearly helping close to 500 families with the supply of ration and necessary items.

On the research front, our parent organization, Deccan Education Society had invited research papers regarding the impact of COVID19 on different sectors and their solutions; Another project which was taken up was speaking to NGO and documenting the work done by NGO within Mumbai and Thane region and whether they needed any more funding or expertise to reach out to people. The objective behind these activitieswas to help the government authorities in their fight against COVID-19 and help gain a better perspective on the same.

Inspite of the lockdown and working remotely, we felt oneness with our organization and all the stakeholders felt a sense of camaraderie and hence coping amidst this lockdown helped to make life “normal” .

Udyōjak — The Entrepreneurial Cell

At the DES’s NMITD we have developed an ecosystem of entrepreneurship. Till date DES’s NMITD has shaped and harnessed the entrepreneurial journey of 16 MCA and MMS students, who are contributing to the economy and India Inc. India, which has the largest youth population in the world with around 66 per cent of the total population under the age of 35 (United Nations Report, 2003). This phenomenon is called, “Demographic Dividend” who will contribute to India’s economy. At DES’s NMITD, we encourage our MCA and MMS students throughout various initiatives to inculcate and harness their enterprising spirit .

Through the mentor-mentee concept we come to know about the students who wish to become an entrepreneur. After identifying these students, NMITD fosters entrepreneurship, through various activities, we help them create a business plan, feasibility reports and other technical assistance for their startup. Our budding entrepreneurs have many questions which are answered by experts through workshops and lecture series. We guide them to focus on the procedures and legalities of setting up an organization. We also aware them about the various seminars which are conducted in association with AICTE and the state government to educate entrepreneurs about various schemes (like funding, technological support and various other initiatives by the govt.).

During lectures they are asked to prepare business plans, marketing strategies, presentations for angel investors . We also conduct one on one session and also suggest some innovative ideas that could be built into a successful enterprise. Even senior students or other individual who has launched their own start-up are welcome to help and guide budding entrepreneurs. At DES’s NMITD, we ignite the spirit of entrepreneurship and encourage them to think creatively and come up with innovative business idea. We develop network in the corporate world. So if any student has a start-up idea, but not sure regarding where to begin and how to proceed, then we connect them with the corporate leaders.

To promote our own alumni, we the DES’s NMITD has developed a culture of appointing our own alumni as a vendor for our services. For instance, we have given our website development and AMC, CCTV AMC to our Alumni. Even we purchased all require trophies and gifts from our alumni. Even our parent society i.e. Deccan Education Society has started a start-up club, which conducts frequent activities regarding start-ups, where our students participate to get more insightful.
